Info and History
The Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc. (PSM) was established on October 14, 1971 by some senior faculty members of the College of Agriculture , University of the Philippines at Los Baños, College, Laguna 4031. It is a non-stock, non-profit corporation with SEC Registration Number 56-003-499-199-NV and has permanent office at the 2nd Floor, EC Arcade, Demarses Subdivision, College, Laguna 4031 (Tel. 049-536-5794).
PSM was created with the following objectives:
- promotion of scientific knowledge in microbiology or related fields through workshops, symposia, trainings, reports, and publications,
- stimulation of scientific investigations and advancement in the frontiers of microbiology and/or allied fields,
- contribution to the development of education in microbiology, and
- recognition and accreditation of members in different specialized fields of microbiology
Society is governed by its code of ethics and by-laws
Membership
Membership to the society is classified as charter, regular, life, honorary, and sustaining. At the time of this writing (February 2005), PSM has a total of 4,892 members (1,385 of those are active and 3,507 are inactive). No special qualifications are required to become a member except an interest in microbiology. PSM has regional chapters in Northern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao and its members are arbitrarily categorized into 9 divisions, namely, Basic Microbiology, Medical Microbiology, Food Microbiology, Microbiology Education, and Veterinary Microbiology for CLUSTER I and Agricultural Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Aquatic Microbiology, and Environmental Microbiology for CLUSTER II. Each division is represented in the Board of Directors.

Philippine Academy of Microbiology
PSM has an academic and accrediting arm known as the Philippine Academy of Microbiology (PAM), the members of which are mostly senior microbiologists in the country. The following are the objectives of the PAM:
- to develop and maintain a high standard of practice in the field of microbiology,
- to formulate rules, regulations and guidelines relative to accreditation, certification and membership to the PAM, and
- to accredit, certify and classify life members of the Society according to the defined standards and qualification requirements which may include written and/or oral examination.
Activities
The major activities of the PSM include the holding of 2 Cluster Symposia scheduled sometime in November of that year and February of the following year and the Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting scheduled usually on the 2 nd week of May of each year at a place chosen by the Board of Directors. The PSM publishes the PSM Newsletter which disseminates PSM activities, information and announcements to the members. It also provides a small amount as thesis support to microbiology graduate students.
